Great news from KAKIS

Hello everybody from the CEO of KAKIS

Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to write you about KAKIS progress during Startupbootcamp accelerator. I wrote this newsletter partly on the flights back to Slovenia and partly on the way to meeting in Netherlands.

Grant of 54.000€

Last week I went back to Slovenia to sign a non-refundable grant for 54.000€. The rules for signing the grant were very strict, therefore, II had to sign and validate it by a local notary. I tried to do everything in Netherlands, but the process was too complicated and expensive. A quick calculations shown that the cost was almost the same as the round-trip ticket . You could guess which option I chose. An option to flight to Slovenia and meet with my girlfriend was very nice. “Happy wife, happy life.”

In the end of May we decided to continue work without one of team members. Main problem was that we didn’t feel a real connection with her. I believe that we did our best, we as employers and her as an employee. But something didn’t work well.

Our progress at Startupbootcamp

In overall, I think that we’re performing very well in the Startupbootcamp accelerator. The roles of each team members are clarified, tasks are more organized (we started to use Trello) and the end results are much better than before. We chose 7 mentors out of 20. We are quite amazed by theirs’ knowledge. We feel a little bit doubt because of the rest 13 menthors.. Sometimes, I am worried that one of the 13 mentors could be our golden egg. But the KAKIS team had to decide, so we did. Mostly, all of us were agree with the  we all agree which ones are »the ones«. With the help of one mentor, we defined a clearer five and one year vision and clarified what is our mission. We just found out that the process of ordering, building, delivering and installing the units was not well organised. This week we will work on improving this processes.

Till now we have very good experience here in the Smart City and Living 2017 program. Before I came here, I was sure we will go out to party more often and we will have more free time. But it’s not like this. Actually we work from early in the morning, till late in the evening. Bigger part of KAKIS team is living together what means we are all the day talking about business. We brainstorm or solve problems almost every evening.

Pitching madness

Lately I am fed up with the big amount of pitches we need to perform. In general I did not do so well with pitching, mostly due to not taking time to prepare. I had to improvised a lot during the performance. We did an experiments with pitch for a beer. I think the intro is quite unique. I am very confident that the final pitch will be outstanding. The pitch is becoming my main priority. It’s just four more weeks till Demo day. Co-founder of Startupbootcamp promised us if we will do an outstanding pitch, he will put a picture of KAKIS team on his wall of fame in his office.

Business opportunities & results

Now, let’s talk about business and let’s see our great achievements and our greater fails. Due to three orders of KAKIS, we had to finish the last 10% of details our toilet. We did some improvement in the structure, composting system and added some accessories. I would prefer that the orders came few weeks before the program started, not right in the middle of it.

We installed our first toilet in the municipality of Murska Sobota (north east part of Slovenia). There were some construction mistakes due to having a new producer. We had to do some corrections in the next days. Actually it was my mistake because I was pushing the product to go out and I did not found out the mistakes.

Last week we got a hint that another municipality from Slovenia will buy two units. We are very happy with each new sell as it means that there is a product market fit.

We validated big interest from event organizers wishing sustainable and user friendly toilets. One organization just asked for a price-list for 50 units. Lately we found out that the girl was just so excited that she wanted to have them at any costs. But her bosses said it is not going like this. In general the organizers are not interested in buying the toilets, they just want to rent it when they need them.

Till now, golf courses didn’t express special interest. A lot of people suggest us to focus on municipalities. There is the problem of long sales cycle and many people involved in decision making.

Not far behind, we had a not so well designed web page. I did it by myself and from my point of view was good enough. Now we did a small redesign, it’s a little better but still not professional. My ideology is to not put too much energy in something that you are not sure if is working. As we know now we have a product-market fit and it’s time to redesign it in a professional way.

Patenting on the way

We also started the patenting process already few weeks ago. It is moving very very slow. An organization from Slovenia is helping us with funds that we got from a business competition. I plan we will finish the process before Demo day.

On Friday I meet with Jelle, a guy helping with volunteers and other projects inside Vondelpark. He showed our product to a friend and he had an idea to buy 10 pieces and make a job out of it. 10 toilets around the park, each costing 50 cents per use can make a monthly wage for a person. Next weeks we will probably meet with many people doing ecological and sustainable activities. We also have scheduled some meetings with rental companies and festival organizers.

Right now, when I am finishing this newsletter, me and Miha are on the train to Barneveld. We have a meeting with a medium size rental company. I hope we will find the informations we are searching.

About investment, I am still confused if we should find an Angel investor with smart money or shall we go to bootstrap. Usually I prefer harder option and bootstrapping surely is. For us is also very interesting the option of crowdinvesting where we won’t give any equity. We have to decide which options are we going for as soon as possible.

HELP NEEDED!

We need your HELP. If anybody from you knows a contact from rental companies, wood producers or waste management here in Netherlands, we would be very gratefull to you.

That’s all for now. We will keep you in touch with the next newsletter.

Best regards, David and the KAKIS team
